Natural Dyeing Workshop at Broomfield Park
Turn plants into colour, and colour into a bracelet you made yourself
There's something quietly magical about making your own colour from scratch. Long before dye came in a bottle, people used the plants around them — petals, leaves, roots — to colour wool and cloth. This summer, Friends of Broomfield Park invites you to try it for yourself in a relaxed, hands-on workshop spread across three sessions.
Whether you're coming with family, friends, or on your own, you'll forage dye plants with our volunteer gardeners, watch the sun slowly transform your wool, and finish with a one-of-a-kind friendship bracelet to take home.
How it works
Session 1 – Discover & Dye: Join a guided walk with one of Broomfield Park's volunteer gardeners to find the plants that make the best natural dyes. Gather what you need and set up your own solar dye jar, left to work its magic in the conservatory.
Session 2 – Reveal the Colours: Come back to open your jar and see what colours have emerged — every jar turns out a little differently. Prepare your dyed wool, and take a look around the park's dye garden if there's time.
Session 3 – Weave Your Bracelet: Weave your naturally dyed wool into a friendship bracelet — a beautiful, personal keepsake of your time in the park.
